On Friday 9/19/26 the Hudson River Derby (NYFC VS REDBULL NY) took place at Yankee Stadium.
Previously, the teams faced off in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, where New York City FC beat Red Bull NY 3-1, advancing in the tournament. These two teams also met in the regular MLS season at Sports Illustrated Stadium, where it ended in a 1-1 draw.
Given the historic rivalry and both teams’ performances this season, this game would determine whether New York was Red or Blue. The presence of both Pep Guardiola (former Manchester City Coach) and Mauricio Pochettino (USMNT Coach) at the Derby added fuel to this ongoing rivalry.
As the match kicked off in the first half, there were many chances from both sides, but no point gain from either side. However, in the second half of the match, Red Bull New York scored a goal by Julian Hall in the 56th minute of the game.

New York City FC made substitutions with Alonso Martinez returning back home from his injury last year while playing for the Costa Rican national team, unfortunately NYCFC was unable to equalize the goal or score within the remaining minutes, resulting in the win going to Red Bull New York.
Jame Sands commented on the pass back that caused the goal, stating, ” The mistake I made… unacceptable for myself. I’ve played a lot of football games for this club, and mistakes do happen, but it doesn’t make them any easier, so I feel responsible for that… And it hurts because I thought the performance otherwise was good”
As the Derby came to a close, this put New York City FC in 9th place and the Red Bulls New York in 8th place. With more games to play and playoffs starting soon, both teams are pushing forward, with about 8 games remaining in the regular MLS season.
